Dear Therapist..."I'm a Man with An Eating Disorder"

Feb 16, 2022

Dear Charlotte,

I sometimes make myself sick after eating too much. I'm embarrassed and have told no one but you. I'm a guy so feel extra weird.

Any advice?

This is such an underreported issue and the stigma is brutal still, for men with disordered eating.

Do you have a sense of what prompts this pattern, if it's to do with evacuating something on the inside? There's help for this and understanding. Therapy might be a good idea.

Therapy can help give you insight about what your eating may symbolise, and can also offer support and strategies. Looking at your background, your memories of food, your sense of self and the emotional associations of eating, you can begin to work through your eating issues.

I very much respect your acknowledging the issue.

You're not alone,
