About Me

I am an experienced psychotherapist working with adult individuals and couples. I have a particular interest in working with anxiety and depression, as well as with women who have suffered a loss in pregnancy or a struggle with fertility. I draw upon a range of thinking, ideas and techniques to help me in my work - including those of CBT, compassion focused work and others that are curious about our early relationships we have had with our caregivers.

I have personally benefited from a mindfulness practice for over 15 years, and continue to train in compassion-based ideas. I'm very happy to discuss and explain these further.

I hope our initial meeting would allow you to talk freely about what brought you to me, along with any goals you may wish to achieve and any questions you may have about therapy. Importantly, you will experience what I'm like and how I work. In turn, I would explain my policy on confidentiality, fees, cancellations and appointment times. If we agree to work together, we may then work out for how long - it may be just a few sessions or on an open-ended basis.

I don't expect you to lie down on a couch (although you are welcome to), nor do I sit in silence. I hope to be in dialogue with you, and I welcome any material that may be useful for you to share - drawings, dreams, journals, poems included. While I hope to further your understanding of your distress - which can be very helpful - I focus on resourcing you to make changes in thinking and behaviour.

I also offer clinical supervision to therapists.

Training and qualifications

I have a Masters Degree in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy. I am registered with the UKCP, which means I follow their code of ethics and am subject to their complaints procedure.

My latest book, published in August 2022, Everyone's A Critic explores the universal habit of self-criticism through stories of fictionalised case-studies (Virago Press) - I'd say I know quite a bit about ways to tame that beast.

My first book, The Brink of Being, explores the experience of miscarriage (Virago Press/Penguin USA). It was awarded Popular Medicine Book of the Year 2021 by the British Medical Association, and was runner up Book of the Year 2021 by the British Psychological Society. It has been published in Taiwan, Poland and the USA.

I have worked as a therapist in Higher Education, for two NHS trusts and for a charitable service, which means I have had the privilege of working with a number of presenting issues with people from many walks of life.

Many moons ago I began my professional life teaching law and practising it as a solicitor. I have a BA Hons Juris from Oxford University and an LLM from King's College, London University. My writing has been published in The Times, The New York Times, Therapy Today and Psychologies Magazine. I regularly review books for The Times Literary Supplement.
