Marielle Albers
Integrative psychotherapistAbout Me
Welcome. My name is Marielle - I am an experienced psychotherapist, art therapist and supervisor working with adults in person in SW London, as well as online. I am an integrative psychotherapist, which means that I adapt my way of working according to your personality and specific concerns, drawing on a variety of theories, as we are all unique and need different things at different times in our lives. I see counselling or psychotherapy as a creative process, helping clients to facilitate finding new ways of expanding, growing and adapting to present life or circumstances.
Apart from talking therapy, I also offer the possibility to use art materials or imagination, to invite you to explore deeper layers of feelings. Using art materials in therapy does not require any artistic skills or abilities: for some people it can offer a valuable extra channel of communicating. Exploring art work, dreams or imagination, can help to find new meaning and deeper insight about yourself. This way of working can be particularly useful if you find it difficult to articulate your feelings in words, or perhaps conversely, if words keep you ‘stuck in your head’ in repetitive thinking patterns.
Using art materials in therapy is always a choice and we will explore your issues in a way that works best for you.
Experience
I am an experienced therapist working mainly in private practice. I am also a staff member of the Institute of Art and Therapy in Education as an examiner, facilitator and tutor. I have experience with working with clients from diverse backgrounds with a wide variety of issues such as low self-esteem, depression and anxiety, loss, abuse, trauma and intimacy issues. I have previously held psychotherapy positions in two NHS trusts in London, providing individual and group art psychotherapy to inpatients and on Forensic Wards. I also worked as art psychotherapist at Action on Addiction and at MIND in Tower Hamlet and for a children’s charity in schools.
Before that, I worked in international marketing management in Holland and the United Kingdom. I am also an artist, and through this I have become interested in different ways of expression that can help give a voice to feelings and thoughts.

Training and qualifications
I have a Master’s Degree in Integrative Arts Psychotherapy from the Institute for Arts and Therapy in Education (UEL). Art psychotherapist is a state regulated profession and requires a rigorous training, which includes 4+ years of personal therapy. The Institute for Art and Therapy in Education (IATE) is unique in that its graduates are trained and registered Art Therapists as well as Integrative Therapists and often combine both talking therapy and art therapy. I abide by the codes of practice and ethics of my membership organisations, UKCP, HCPC, BAAT and BACP. I attend regular continued professional training sessions to keep up to date with relevant developments in psychotherapy and neuroscience. I work with a clinical supervisor to regularly review my work.
