Jen Walsh
Integrative counsellorAbout Me
I'm as enthusiastic about counselling now as I was when I started over 19 years ago. I continue to be amazed by the profound changes humans can make to improve their lives at any age.
I want you to get the most out of every session. I will show up ready and willing to collaborate with you on the things that are bothering you. You will find me to be punctual, attentive, friendly and professional. I am a creative thinker so will be offering you my thoughts and helping you develop new insights and tap into your inner wisdom. I will share ideas for things you could be doing between sessions to supplement our work together (and give you the most value for your hard-earned money!) - these are recommendations not requirements.
My style suits people who want to tap into their inner resources, try new approaches, navigate life transitions or decisions - who want a fuller life and freedom from stuck patterns or negative views of themselves. I work best with clients who are ready to be bold in their exploration, have lots of curiosity, ready to engage in their own work, and who want a bit more interaction from their therapist - I don't just nod my head. You may like the idea of journalling, or trying some nature-based activities you can do near to home to expand on what we cover in our sessions. Most importantly I will hold hope and non-judgement, especially in sessions when you might be doubting yourself. And I will cheer you on when you are ready to finish our work together.
Key themes that come up in my work are developing self-compassion, understanding your needs and how you can meet them and soothe difficult emotions, creating boundaries and clear communication, and trying out creative approaches to self-expression, healing and support.
I consider myself to be an active counsellor, who likes to understand my clients in a holistic way, but ultimately I trust your judgement about what does and doesn't work for you. I may offer invitations to try different things but you are always in charge of the sessions and what is talked about.
I engage in regular clinical supervision and practise excellent self-care. If anything gets in the way of my ability to show up for our sessions whole-heartedly I will inform you at the earliest opportunity. I have excellent professional boundaries so you know we will be focusing on YOU when we are together. I will tailor-make my recommendations for things you can do between sessions based on what I learn about you. I might suggest books, podcasts, music, TED talks, video clips, films that I think you can benefit from.
