Amanda Stone Nash
Integrative psychotherapistAbout Me
As a therapist, I work with many people who feel they have to take difficult decisions about their relationships or with their work, and want to explore their feelings and fears. I also have many clients who are experiencing depression or grief after the death of a parent, sibling or partner, or as a result of a relationship breakdown or divorce. I support their process of dealing with this in a respectful and open way, reflecting my training and lived experience of challenging events.
I have worked on line and by phone as a therapist for over 10 years and was trained to work in this way to provide confidential therapy for individuals supported by their Employee Assistance Programme, including academics and accountants. This has given me considerable experience and interest in this way of working. I also have clients who I meet in person for therapy when required.
My work with clients over the past twelve years has deepened my commitment to self-exploration and knowledge of the impact of family systems, cultural and social influences and inherited beliefs. I have worked for many years with charities supporting people affected by stigma and discrimination and particularly in relation to sexuality or gender. I recently completed an MA in Gender & Culture and explored issues of identity in my dissertation, focusing on women who are classified as "childless".
I draw on my yoga and mindfulness training to support my work with people who are experiencing stress and was a co-director of the first Slow Down London festival. I also run workshops in advanced teacher trainings for yoga teachers to explore boundaries and group dynamics and continue my own yoga practice.
I grew up in Australia and then moved with my parents and brothers to Malaysia and England, attending four different schools in four years. I experienced confusion about losing friendships, extended family and identity and this, plus bereavements in my early thirties, led me to start therapy at that time. I saw it as a way to explore immediate issues of grief and shock, but soon realised it was an invaluable resource. Therapy helped me to make sense of my earlier experiences and to live with more self-awareness and a willingness to grow.
After university, I had a successful earlier career in media and public relations, working in fashion and retail, and later in marketing for global brands. I moved to live and work in Singapore, Sydney and Bali, and then returned to the UK to work in communications & campaigning for an international charity. I wanted to use my work experience in a way that was more meaningful for me and enjoyed working with various NGOs for the next 10 years. However, I began to realise this demanding and nomadic life was affecting my relationships and health, and decided I wanted to train as a psychotherapist. I returned to London and joined Spectrum Psychotherapy centre and completed a 5 year training.
