Sophie Thompson
Person-centred/humanistic psychotherapistAbout Me
Hi I’m Sophie, a therapist working in private practice online across the UK. The way I work is focused around what you bring to sessions, and what you as an individual need. I won’t tell you what to do and I don’t believe there is a one size fits all approach to mental health and wellbeing. I offer a safe and non-judgmental relationship where we can explore whatever it is that you are struggling with together. During sessions I may offer different perspectives or ways of looking at things, but this comes with the understanding that you are the expert on yourself and with the aim of helping you to find your own way of approaching the difficulties you face.
I started counselling in 2016 and have worked with a wide range of clients within a general counselling service, as well as in specialised roles supporting survivors of childhood sexual abuse, and counselling students at a university.
I am able to work with many difficulties people bring to therapy, however there are some areas I have significant experience and interest in, including working with:
· - Anxiety and depression, whether this has been clinically diagnosed or not
· - Survivors of trauma and abuse
· - Working with transitions e.g., relationship breakdown, changing job, moving area, attending university
- - Embodiment – the way we experience and interact with our bodies
· - Unexpected and unresolved bereavement
· - Issues around identity
- Climate/environmental anxiety
Alongside my therapeutic practice, I have experience supporting people with severe mental health difficulties and learning disabilities and have also worked for a climate change charity. I understand the impact health and social conditions can have on wellbeing and ability to flourish, and recognise that there are factors beyond our control, but I have also seen the transformation that can happen in the way people are able to be in their situation, make changes to things which are in their control, and find ways to make life more meaningful given the right support.
Mindfulness meditation and yoga are important to my own wellbeing, and I am interested in the way these practices and body awareness can affect our mental health. Whilst these approaches are not right for everyone, if you would like to incorporate mindfulness into our work together then this is something we can discuss.
If you are interested in working with me then please get in touch so we can have a chat about what you are hoping to get from therapy, answer any questions you may have, and see whether we would be a good fit.
