Patrick Nelson
Integrative therapistAbout Me
Life is challenging at times. Responsibilities feel like burdens. Relationships lack connection. It is understandable to seek a place to feel safe and secure. Isolation can feel heavier, being stuck in our minds, ruminating of past experiences, questioning belonging, listening to self criticism. I offer clients a warm connection to feel seen, heard, and understood. Our therapeutic relationship is authentic, focussed on sharing your ideas and awareness, with no expectation or judgement. Voicing negative thoughts, uncomfortable emotions and difficult memories will bring a mutual understanding why you feel overwhelm, directionless, or powerless. I will be with you every step of the way to improve self-esteem, moving from coping towards self direction.
Sharing what is troubling you can feel uncomfortable, particularly with friends and family. You disclose your issue quickly, hoping it will not be judged, nor offered a "should" solution that doesn't resonate. I listen with empathic curiosity, slowing it down, understanding context, reflecting back to establish mutual clarity that makes sense to you. Having your hopes, fears, identify, addiction, ADHD, trauma, deprression be received with unconditional positive regard builds a foundation where you can begin to see things differently.
Stress can be difficult to manage. Often stress impairs the connection with people most important to us. Surprising stress can lead us to present a false self to the outside world, or engage in harmful behaviours. Stress factors: expectations by others, crossing boundaries, need for validation, fear of exclusion all have a compounding affect on mental health and wellbeing. Regulating emotions and heightened sensitivities will facilitate an openness to new experiences.
I help individuals with a wide variety of challenges:
Relationships: Family issues, intimacy, improved communication, promoting own needs versus pleasing others.
Mental Health: alleviating stress, depression, addiction, loneliness, self harm
Trauma & Loss: Bereavement, chronic illness, divorce, financial difficulty
Wellbeing: managing anxiety, neglect, burnout, low self-esteem, work / life balance
Identity: sexuality, retirement, redundancy
I am an Integrative therapist, drawing on different modalities to adapt to where you are at. For example:
Person-Centred: building trust from renewed understanding of our "humanness" and fallability
Gestalt: mind body connection. The body communicates things that words cannot
Existential: exploring life's meaning, one's purpose
Internal Family Systems: complexity of our various parts that overwhelm a sense of safety
CBT: solutions focussed. Challenge beliefs to verify rational thinking
We will work towards your goals for therapy. I will listen with openness and care, reflecting back to articulate meaning, guided by shared principles of acceptance and empowerment.
