Gill Dunbar
Psychodynamic psychotherapistAbout Me
I am a fully trained and experienced psychotherapist who has been working in private practive forover 20 years. I am also a qualified supervisor. I have worked in the NHS and charitable organisations for many years and have supervised in a number of different statutory, charitable and voluntary settings. I have been involved with teaching and supervising trainees at the British Association of Psychotherapist and also at the Westminster Pastoral Foundation.
I work with people who present with many different problems but I especially find that those who are struggling with depression, anxiety and relationship issues can benefit from working with me. I also have particular experience of working in an Eating Disorders Service and ran a Bereavement Service. In addition, I worked in a Doctors practice for many years and have thus learnt to use my knowledge and experience flexibly to help many different people who come from all over the world and present with a great variety of issues. I very much enjoy seeing people from different cultural backgrounds.
I find it important to really listen deeply to what i am being told and then to communicate warmly and generously whilst at the same time challenging habitual and stuck patterns. I find it is also valuable to support my clients' healthy side so that confidence can be built and new ways of viewing themselves can become possible. Increasingly I find it important to work with people's experience as it is felt in the body as this can help to access feelings which may normally be ignored. I aim to help my clients lead a more meaningful and satisfying life. I pay attention to the relationship that develops between myself and my client so that it is possible to really engage deeply.
I trained both at the Westminster Pastoral Foundation and in the Jungian Section of the British Association of Psychotherapists (this recently merged with two other psychotherapy organisations and is renamed the British Psychothyerapy Foundation). I use my knowledge and experience of both Jungian and Psychoanalytic thinking to inform my work. However I work flexibly where appropriate and have much experience of short term work where this is preferred. I offer regular weekly sessions or more intensive therapy where this is desired.
