Dr Peter Finlay
Psychodynamic psychotherapistAbout Me
Previously, an NHS Honorary Therapist, I have been in private practice since 2006.
I studied under Dr. Diane LeFevre and the post-graduate course that she supervised included a great deal of clinical practice on both neurotic and psychotic patients, after which I continued as an Honorary Therapist at Basildon Mental Health Hospital until I established my own private practice. I now practice from my consulting room at my home in Stebbing which is in a quiet and discreet setting and also at The Harley Consultancy in Harley Street, London. I offer a calm and empathetic approach while we work through whatever is troubling you.
I have particular experience in Adoption Issues, Anxiety, Bereavement, General counselling, Identity problems, Obsessional behaviour, Personal Development, Phobias, Self Esteem and Self-worth, Sex related issues, Sexual identity and Issues with fluidity.
Although my primary approach is Psychodynamic, I also call upon a variety of other theoretical ‘models’ including Analytic Therapy, CBT (Cognitive Behavioural), Person Centred, EFT and Mindfulness as appropriate.
I work with Adults and Young People (18+) one to one either long-term work or time-limited as well as online counselling using Skype, Facetime, RingMD and Sylo.
I am a registered with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and fully insured by Towergate. I am bound and adhere to the BACP and ICO codes of ethics and am registered with BUPA, AXA-PPP and Aviva as a provider.
Prior to becoming a psychotherapist my career was in computer forensic analysis and data recovery. While it may seem that these are rather diverse paths to pursue, they are in fact strangely related:
Forensic investigation and recovery requires a diligent concentration on recognising clues in order to understand the difference between what is presented and what is actually the truth; as well as following threads to reveal the real story below the surface. This could be a model description of the process behind Psychodynamic Psychotherapy!
Thank you for your help over the last 3 months – it has had a profound impact upon me. MHJ
I just wanted to drop you a line to express my sincere gratitude for helping me through the most terrible episode in my life. It is cliché to be a depressed actress but you enabled me to refocus and I am not surprised that you are becoming one of the ‘go-to’ therapists for celebs and those in the media.
I really can’t thank you enough and hope you keep your promise to come to the premier! MJD
. . . “Being recommended by my director ---------- to you was one of the best things that has happened to me. I can’t think of a big enough adjective for the gratitude I feel for giving me back my life and rescuing my floundering career. OCD is definitely not a good skill to have as an actress! . . . SM

Zoom, Facetime, Whats App & Skype Sessions
£90 to £125 for individuals and £125 to £175 for couples. (50 minute session)
This applies also for the initial consultation (sometimes termed the assessment) where we see how we get on and gain an understanding of what is troubling you. We will also make diary dates for future sessions together.
Sessions last a standard 50 minutes (Often termed a therapeutic hour)
We will decide together whether a fixed number of sessions or a longer, open ended plan is most appropriate. It is often helpful to have a planned ending but we will review the process as our time together proceeds.
