Why choose counselling?

Have you experienced a loss in your life? Maybe you've had a bereavement, due to Covid-19 or another cause. Or perhaps you've lost a job, pet, relationship, or sense of identity. Loss can bring many difficult and confusing emotions. Talking to someone outside your family or friendship group can really help. However, It can be difficult opening up to someone new, and it's important you find the right person for you. Someone you can trust, who will try hard to understand what you are going through.

A bit about me

I'm Laura, of Creative Souls Counselling. I am a qualified counsellor (MSc), who is registered with the BACP. I am fully insured and hold an enhanced DBS certificate. My background is in education, and I have a passion for supporting people to become the best version of themselves, which is what led me into counselling.

I have worked in a hospice setting, supporting clients who had lost a loved one. Alongside my private practice, I now work for a charity working with clients who have lost a baby, or are experiencing other pregnancy/ birth- related issues such as post-natal depression or the effects of a traumatic birth. It is a privilege to work with clients and I am continually learning and growing through the work I do.

I work from a person-centred perspective, aiming to foster a positive and trusting therapeutic relationship where I can journey alongside you as you explore your thoughts and feelings. During our sessions, you will find a safe, confidential space where you will be warmly accepted without judgement. Rather than offering advice, I listen and help you arrive at your own understanding needed to move forwards.

What do counselling sessions involve?

I offer a free 15 minute phone consultation, where we can discuss why you are seeking therapy, and whether I am the right counsellor to support you. If we agree to work together, we will meet for an initial session, where I will do an informal assessment, and we will go through the counselling agreement together. After this, sessions are on a regular basis (usually weekly). Each session lasts 50 minutes.

What is online counselling?

During this time, I am offering telephone, or video counselling via Zoom. Perhaps you have reservations about the effectiveness of remote counselling? You might be surprised to learn that there is evidence to prove that remote counselling can be highly effective, and comes with its own benefits, such as the flexibility to work in your own environment, at a time that suits you.

Walk & talk therapy

Does the idea of sitting talking to someone about your emotions in an enclosed space feel intimidating or restrictive? Or are you someone who really connects with nature and loves being outdoors? Walk & talk therapy may be just right for you. It is basically counselling that happens as you walk alongside your counsellor in a quiet, natural setting.

It is now widely recognised that nature can have a powerful impact on our mental health and wellbeing. If you choose this option, you will be given a choice of locations, each with routes risk-assessed as suitable for walk & talk therapy. We will begin with an online assessment session to discuss the suitability of this type of therapy for you, and agree on how to to proceed with sessions.

Creative counselling sessions

Are you somebody who likes to express themselves through creative methods such as drawing or painting? I am now offering creative counselling sessions. As with conventional counselling, we will begin with an assessment session, but during following sessions, you will be given opportunity to use different art materials, pictures, symbols or objects to explore your emotions. Although the sessions are client-led, I can give a prompt, or suggest a starting point, and will guide you through with observations and reflections. This is not about producing a piece of art- it's about what happens in the process. As such, you do not need to be a "good" artist, or have any experience working with the art materials.
