Joan Fogel
Psychodynamic psychotherapistAbout Me
I offer long-term and brief work to individuals, couples and groups in NW London and London Bridge.
My outlook is fundamentally psychodynamic: the recognition of unconscious as well as conscious processes and behaviours. I am qualified as a group-analytic psychotherapist which means keeping clearly in mind all aspects of a client's life. I am influenced by experience in Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT) where the emphasis is on patterns of relating. I am familiar with and employ aspects of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) which tends to concentrate on habits of thinking.
I have many years' experience in the mental health field: in NHS psychotherapy departments, in a therapeutic community, with adolescents, young people in care, with people with learning disabilities, and with those who work in these fields.
The earlier part of my professional career was as a teacher, trainer, advocate and counsellor, working with adults and young people. My experience in education and the social service sectors, along with a continuing interest in psychology, has provided a broad understanding of developmental and learning difficulties.
I offer supervision and am a Balint group leader of groups supporting teachers and GPs.
I am a tutor and group conductor on a psychodynamic counselling and psychoanalytic training. I am actively involved in GASI (Group Analytic Society International) and am a Fellow of the FPC (Foundation for Psychotherapy and Counselling - the graduate body of WPF (Westminster Pastoral Foundation).
I am a member of and abide by the codes of ethics and good practice of the following organisations:
