Dr Poul RohlederPsychoanalytic psychotherapist
I am an experienced clinical psychologist and psychoanalytic psychotherapist, and a Dynamic Interpersonal Therapy (DIT) practitioner. I have over 15 years clinical work experience in private practice and the NHS.
I have a private practice in central London, where I offer intensive psychoanalytic psychotherapy (3 times weekly sessions) and brief and long-term psychodynamic psychotherapy (once weekly sessions), including dynamic interpersonal therapy. At the moment I am only offering online counselling and psychotherapy sessions via Zoom.
Psychoanalytic or psychodynamic psychotherapy is a non-directive talking therapy which aims to help individuals explore more unconscious aspects of their behaviour, thoughts and feelings. By exploring these issues we can come to understand them more, and explore ways in which we can change. Psychotherapy can be brief in duration offered once weekly. Longer-term psychoanalytic psychotherapy offered three times a week or more may be more suitable to explore how past issues relate to current difficulties, and in particular, repeated patterns of behaviour and relating.
I also offer Dynamic Interpersonal Therapy (or DIT), which is a time limited and structured psychotherapy for depression, typically delivered over 16 sessions. DIT aims to explore the connection between your depression or anxiety symptoms and your relationships, by identifying a core repetitive pattern or relating to others.
I am governed by the standards of conduct, performance and ethics of the Health & Care Professions Council, the British Psychological Society and the British Psychoanalytic Council.
I have an interest in providing psychotherapy for depression, grief and loss, anxiety and worry, difficulties related to sexuality and gender, struggles with feelings of shame and guilt, low self-image and self-esteem, and difficulties with life transitions, migration and belonging.
Alongside my clinical work, I am an established academic and researcher and am a senior lecturer at the Department of Psychosocial and Psychoanalytic Studies at the University of Essex. I have been involved in the training of clinical psychologists and psychodynamic counsellors. I am a board member of the British Psychoanalytic Council.
OnlineI also provide my services online.

Making an appointment
You can contact me via the contact page on my website. If I have availability, I will offer you an initial assessment consultation. This may be extended over two sessions. During this assessment I will ask you a number of questions about you, and your background, and what has led you to seek counselling or psychotherapy. The assessment will also give you an opportunity to learn about how I work and what you can expect of me. For online sessions, I will email you a questionnaire to complete and return to me in preparation for this initial consultation. Following this assessment, I would be able to offer you options for therapy. If I am not the right person, I will connect you to someone who can help.
Psychotherapy or counselling sessions are 50-minutes. Sessions are confidential, except in circumstances where there is a threat to your safety or the safety of another person.
Fees for an initial consultation are £130. Fees for ongoing therapy are assessed on an individual basis and depends on type of therapy and frequency of sessions. I currently have a vacancy for intensive psychoanalytic psychotherapy (3 times weekly) for which lower fees are considered. I am a registered provider with most health insurers. Please check with your insurer if I am registered with them, and what fees they will cover, and how many sessions they will cover.
I am available for supervision of your psychodynamic work. I am also a Dynamic Interpersonal Therapy supervisor. Supervision sessions are also available via Skype. Fees for supervision will be discussed, and depend on individual circumstances (whether student/trainee or qualified professional).
