Martin Firstbrook Integrative psychotherapist , EC2N
I offer a compassionate and research backed approach to counselling and psychotherapy. I understand that considering counselling or therapy can be a daunting process. It is a process most of us would rather avoid and perhaps you have for a long time. Part of us wants to seek help, but another part of us holds us back, hoping that things will get better on their own. Maybe you are feeling down, depressed or anxious. Perhaps you are having relationship difficulties or find yourself behaving in ways that you want to change. Modern life encourages us to sweep our feelings under the carpet and carry on as we are, but if you have decided that now is the time to change things, I can offer a safe and confidential space for us to explore your challenges and find a new way forward together.
I work from the perspective that there is some meaning in your difficulties. For example, our symptoms and life difficulties are often borne out of the part of our brain that wants to hold onto old patterns of thinking, behaving and relating that helped us to survive and succeed in the past. We unconsciously cling onto these patterns when they no longer serve us, or even when they cause us pain, suffering and relational problems. Our job together is to create insight into these patterns, make some meaning of them, and develop strategies together that will help you to move in a new direction.
Please contact me via email or phone for a conversation and we can then decide how to proceed. Typically, the next step will be to arrange a time for an initial consultation. During that meeting we will discuss your situation and get to know each other a little before deciding on whether we will work together for a length of time and on what basis. I work in the City (EC2N) on Mondays and London Bridge (Tooley Street) on Wednesdays and Thursdays. I also work with clients via Skype.
How Long Will it Take?
Different clients have different needs based on their unique circumstances. Some clients will benefit quickly from just six to ten sessions, some may need six months, some may need longer. We will generally start with six sessions and then review whether to stop, to continue for a defined period, or work on an open ended basis until you decide to finish at a time that feels right for you. Typically, if there is to be success on a shorter term basis, your needs will be clear and defined and any underlying challenges will be limited. Long standing issues and patterns that are causing more significant life difficulties require a longer process to enable sufficient time for deep trust to be built with the therapist, and for new neural pathways to be created and embedded.
Initial consultation fee £39.
