Dr Clare MurrayCouple therapy psychotherapist
I am a relationship and psychosexual therapist, with a private practice in South Kensington (Tuesdays only). I qualified from the Tavistock Centre for Couple Relationships in 2008 (MSc). It takes courage for couples to seek help and often the journey of the work can be painful. I endeavour to create a climate of trust and openness with clients through warmth, empathy and dialogue. It is not possible to build a good relationship with my clients without ongoing interaction, which helps us to work creatively with each other. I see both couples and individuals who are experiencing a range of relationship problems (i.e., communication, infidelity, infertility, loss, psychosexual issues) as well as issues related to stages of life (i.e., new parenthood, menopause, 'empty nest' experience, partner illness), that require the couple to renegotiate the parameters of their relationship.
I started my career as a Research Fellow at the Family and Child Psychology Research Centre at City University (1992 - 2005), involved in the design and collection of data for a number of longitudinal studies looking at the social and emotional development of children and the quality of couple relationships in families where children had been both through addicted reproductive techniques (IVF, Donor Insemination, Egg Donation and Surrogacy). We also followed up same sex couples who had had a child through Donor Insemination and Solo mothers who had chosen to have a child by donor insemination. These studies were the first of their kind to be conducted (across the globe) and sparked my passion and interest in relationships. Having completed my PhD I moved into Organisational Psychology and also work as a consultant with a special area of interest and expertise in workplace relationships, developing successful collaboration and creativity through trust-based relationships. Increasingly, I am drawing on the ideas and practice from the couple therapy field in my organisational work, which is an interesting development.
