Claire Ashman Integrative counsellor , GU1
I am a qualified and experienced member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy. I offer both brief (6 - 12 weeks) and long term (open-ended) therapy to young people from the age of 11 upwards and adults and have a current DBS. I have always had a passion to work with people and my career path has also led me to work within the NHS, Social Services and Education.
I offer a safe place where you will be listened to in a non-judgmental way. I take a Person Centred approach which means I will follow your story and not dictate what you should talk about but with a commitment to help you work through what is troubling you.
My counselling room is in my house in a quiet, calm and private space. I also work in Secondary school and College.
I have a keen interest working with young people with a variety of different problems including:
family and attachment issues
depression, anxiety, social anxiety
school issue including bullying and exam stress
self-harm and suicidal thoughts
I have helped adults with sexual identity issues, sexual and domestic abuse, cultural and religious conflicts, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), social anxiety and those experiencing suicidal thoughts.
I have also had many years of experience working in a strong pastoral role in education, building extensive experience with clients with Social and Language communication difficulties associated with Asperger's syndrome and Dyslexia, Dyspraxia and ADHD.
My core training integrates the best of Person-Centered, Psychodynamic and Cognitive Behavioural therapies. For example, first of all, if you have problems with anxiety I will give you practical strategies to reduce your worrying symptoms. It can be wonderful to see a tiny change in behaviour and thinking bring relief and change from week to week, then we would work through the reasons for your anxiety. I combine all of my skills and experience to offer the best therapy, at the heart of which, is to create a trusting, unconditional and safe relationship in which to work.
I find using creative materials rewarding, particularly with younger clients to help them find expression and meaning. These could include sand tray, art materials and puppets which it is a useful way to help put people at their ease.
