Bola Shonubi Psychodynamic psychotherapist , E18
In life we may experience problems, difficulties and trauma that are overwhelming and hard to live with. These issues maybe difficult to understand and hard to resolve. I am a warm non-judgemental Psychotherapist who offers to help you to understand the root causes of your difficulties which will hopefully alleviate the overwhelming nature of them and bring hope of change.
Becoming a counsellor was something that I had a great interest in from a very, very early age. I wanted to listen to people, help them understand themselves and ultimately give them hope.
As I matured and got older I began to look for organisations where I could volunteer to just listen and be there for people that were facing difficult times in their lives. I started volunteering at Mencap (I believe that is now called Mind). I realised that this was a calling/vocation and decided to find out how to train to become a qualified counsellor/psychotherapist. I started training in 1998 while working within another Industry that I knew I would be leaving to follow my calling.
Since 1998 I have completed various training courses in Counselling, culminating in qualifying with a Masters of Science degree in Psychodynamic Counselling and Psychotherapy.
I began my clinical work, pre and post qualification at the Complex Care Clinic of St Ann's Hospital part of the Haringey, Enfield and Barnet NHS Trust in London. I provided psychodynamic therapy for individuals who had very complex psychological/emotional/mental health problems such as borderline personality disorder, paranoid schizoid disorders, depression, anxiety and many more. Most of the therapy that I provided was long term, face to face.
I also worked at the North Essex Partnership Trust, Rectory Lane, Loughton. I saw clients who suffered with long term depression, anxiety, borderline personality disorder and post traumatic stress disorder and many more issues.
I currently offer therapy from my private practice at Lily House in South Woodford, London. I provide long and short term face to face counselling to individuals who as a result of traumatic life events in childhood and adulthood have felt they have been unable to cope or make sense of life anymore.
I work predominantly within the psychodynamic model of psychotherapy. This type of therapy focuses on revealing the unconscious content of an individual's psyche to help relieve or understand where psychic tension. To bring the unconscious mind into consciousness, this helps individuals to understand their deep rooted feelings. This helps to try and resolve the problems and issues that they are experiencing.
Our psyche can bury into our unconscious painful feelings and memories which are to difficult for the conscious mind to process. As a result of the burying of these painful memories and experiences individuals can sometimes behave in ways which they do not understand. Psychodynamic psychotherapy helps to understand these behaviours and make significant changes in their behaviours.
Individuals who are genuinely interested in exploring themselves and are looking for self knowledge as to why they behave the way they do,as well as symptom relief will benefit most from this type of therapy.
