Affairs and Betrayals

Many people would cite trust as being the foundation of a solid, working relationship; this is why betrayals can hurt us so much.

If we feel betrayed by our partner, whether they have an affair or have betrayed our trust in another way, we may feel immense anger, disbelief and sadness. It may also take a toll on our self-esteem and self-worth.

Couples therapist Susanna Abse explains relationship therapy

How can therapy help?

In terms of seeking therapeutic support after an affair or betrayal, some people come individually, others as a couple. For some people, staying together in a couple is not deemed the right decision after a betrayal; if this applies to you then you may want to work with a counsellor or therapist, to give yourself the space to work through the feelings of hurt that you have experienced. Working through these feelings can help you move forward more positively in your personal life, and will help you when you feel ready or keen to find a new relationship.

Some couples who have experienced an affair or betrayal seek to work through it together. In this case, the couple may visit a therapist or counsellor together. Some couples' therapists work with the couple and see both parties individually, some work always with both people in the room.

Moving forward from an affair or betrayal is unlikely to be straightforward. Trust takes time to rebuild, and it's hard work, so of course the desire to maintain the relationship despite the hurt that has been done is necessary. An affair or other betrayal does not have to spell doom for a relationship – couples can and do recover.
