Mental Health and Therapy in Blackpool

Blackpool is a seaside resort on the Lancashire coast in North West England. The town is on the Irish Sea, between the Ribble and Wyre estuaries. It had an estimated population of 142,065 as of 2017, making it the most populous town in Lancashire. Renowned for its Blackpool Tower, one of the most loved and recognisable landmarks in the world and home to the famous Tower Ballroom, Blackpool has the second highest rate of suicide of any upper tier local authority in England, for all persons, during the period 2013-2015.

For centuries Blackpool was a hamlet by the sea. Then during the 18th century it became fashionable for the upper classes to travel to the seaside during the summer. Blackpool's urban fabric and economy remains relatively undiversified, and firmly rooted in the tourism sector, and the borough's seafront continues to attract millions of visitors every year.

Blackpool can be seen to have a very youthful population; in Blackpool there are an estimated 31,976 people aged under 20. Approximately 51% are aged under 10 years and 49% aged 10 to 19 years. With mounting pressures from the recently intensified GCSE and A Level curriculums, mental health issues are on the rise, which may lead to young people to seek out therapy.  Hospital admissions with mental health disorders for young people aged under 18 years from Blackpool are significantly higher than the national average.

Blackpool is the divorce capital of the country and has a divorce rate of 13%, which is higher than the 9% average for England and Wales. This factor may also trigger mental health issues, leading to families seeking help through therapy.
