Tara's next workshop for Welldoing therapists is on 14 January 2026 at 11am. If you're a Welldoing member, book here. For this workshop, please bring a pen and blank paper and/or additional art supplies.
As a therapist in private practice, you might not always think of yourself as a entrepreneur or business owner, but that is part of what you do. And the journey of running your own business can be intense! It is a journey that invites you into growth and showing up on a whole new level, which in itself brings up so much, no matter what stage in your journey you are at.
- It asks for you to create stronger foundations and boundaries.
- It invites you into new levels of receiving.
- It asks you to own your value and worth.
- It brings up your vulnerabilities.
- It asks for you to show up and be visible.
- It requires you to take action.
As you move into new levels – maybe it’s being even more visible; perhaps you are reaching new audiences; it could be that you want to hit a new financial level – you might start to come up against your own inner ‘blocks’ or limiting beliefs, which have the potential to hold you back from what you desire.
These are the thoughts, feelings and ideas (that can be conscious and unconscious) that ‘tell’ you that you can’t do this. That it’s not safe for you to move into this level. That something bad might happen. That you should stay where you are. They often come up as fear or resistance, or a story that you begin to tell yourself as to why you shouldn’t do something.
So, I want to share with you a few ways that can support you to move through these ‘blocks’ if you find yourself coming up against the same brick wall again and again.
1. Identify what’s really happening and re-frame it
If you notice that you are coming up against something again and again, something that is stopping you from moving to the next level, e.g. showing up, taking action – whatever it might be for you, start to get to know it. Bring your awareness to it and begin to dive into it. These questions may help: What is that it happening for you? What is the reason this is happening? What are you afraid might happen, if you do xyz? Do you have resistance coming up? If so, what are you resisting?
As you start to uncover what is going on beneath the surface, you can begin to re-frame it. Ask yourself: is your fear or resistance is true or valid? If it is, how can you support yourself through it? Where can you find examples (either from your own life, or others) where the opposite of what you are telling yourself is actually true, so that you can begin to tell yourself this new more empowering story?
2. See if ‘younger you’ has anything to say about it
Very often blocks come up when there is a memory from childhood where something happened that left you feeling scared, alone, unsafe, embarrassed, left out (insert word of your choice that describes what happened). This often means you have something inside of you, which I might add is very powerful, stopping you from taking the action you want to take, for fear of this experience repeating itself.
So, to move through this – again you need to come into a place of awareness (getting support if you need), and connect with that younger version of you who experienced whatever it was. Just to say there may be more than one occasion, so you may need to do this for different time/ages/memories. Then when you connect to this younger version of you – let them share what they felt and experienced. Let them feel what it was like. So often the memory just needs to be acknowledged and allowed to be felt. Then if needed, ask them what they need now to support them, and imagine yourself giving it to them.
3. Let it move through you
This is a more embodied way of allowing ‘blocks’ to move through, and less for the mind. If something is coming up for you, rather than analysing it and thinking about it too much, you can move it through your body. This could be through movement of some kind – dance is particularly good, or even taking a walk, running, yoga – whatever feels good to you.
You can also paint or draw out the ‘block’. This definitely takes getting out of your head, and you begin by allowing whatever is coming up for you to be felt in your body, then putting paint/pen to paper – without expectation of it looking a certain way, or even what colours you use (although colours can say a lot about what is coming up for you). This activity helps the charge/emotion of the ‘block’ to move through you as you express it on the paper.
Feedback from Tara's previous workshops for Welldoing therapists:
"I found that the workshop was centring and restorative – it put me in touch with a bodily message that I need a break! I have a tendency to run from one thing to another and I found myself thinking that the stillness in the workshop was exactly what I needed. The time passed in the blink of an eye. I have since resolved to make meditation more a part of my daily practice." – Anonymous psychodynamic psychotherapist, London
