Cambridge University psychologist Dr Terri Apter is a well-known name in the study of different family relationships. Her previous books have covered mother-daughter relationships, teenage girls, the strength of friendships, midlife for women. This book though comes directly from her own experience. When she became a grandmother, she was amazed by how it changed her and the dynamics in the whole family, and yet she found no book "that did justice to this new chapter of love" so she set out to explore it more widely.

Grandparenting: On Love and Relationships Across Generations looks at the culture, history and meaning of grandparents, but most closely studies how individuals have found the experience. The modern templates are different, from how parents and their adult children relate, to how much time grandparents will be available to their children.

It is not just because I have become a grandmother for the second time that we chose this for a Welldoing Book of the Month. Dr Apter is a serious social scientist, and a beautiful writer -- and the creation of another generation is a wonderful, life-affirming moment, but not without its problems.
