Joanne Dean
Cognitive behaviour psychotherapistAbout Me
Hello, I'm Jo. You might be here because something is difficult at the moment, or perhaps you're looking to optimise your life through therapy - maybe (probably) a bit of both. Whoever you choose to work with you have already taken a really important step by getting this far.
I can’t promise to have all the answers, but I can promise to show up as my authentic self so you can get to know me, trust me, and form a therapeutic bond that will help us find a way through your difficulties and achieve your goals together. So, let’s start now. I am a cognitive behavioural psychotherapist, a Mum of 2 young boys, wife, cat lover, box set binger, theatre goer and adult ballet class attender (still in the beginner’s class 2 years on, The Royal Ballet hasn’t called yet).
I believe that therapy shouldn’t be a humourless ordeal. It’s talking, person to person, and just like any other time you’re talking to a person sometimes it’s serious, sometimes it’s dynamic, sometimes it’s difficult, sometimes it’s funny and sometimes it’s revolutionary. My style is informal in the therapy room but my sessions are fairly structured. For example we would set a rough idea of what we want to discuss / achieve in the session and ultimately I am change focused – working out what is not serving you and looking at ways to change this through talking but also practical skills and techniques. For me, therapy is a balance between hearing your story, understanding how and why the past is affecting you now, then moving forward through pragmatic change. I am active in therapy, I will ask questions, I can keep the pace, I can steer us to where we need to be when required.
I have worked in the NHS for 15 years with a very broad range of people, personalities, backgrounds, difficulties and diagnoses. This has been through individual therapy, group therapy and couple’s therapy. I have been in private practice for a little over a year, primarily to create some flexibility while my family is young. I am qualified to treat and have a lot of experience in treating anxiety, depression, stress, low self-esteem, OCD, panic attacks, relationship issues, childhood trauma and PTSD. I have a special interest in trauma and ADHD. More on the ADHD – I have received additional training in using CBT techniques to better manage ADHD but I am not able to offer official diagnosis. Some members of my family have ADHD so I come with experience both personally and professionally of the challenges this can pose and possible ways to manage this.
I really love what I do. That dinner party question – If you could do any job what would it be? I’d choose this. Partly due to the devasting lack of talent that is keeping me from the West End but nevertheless – it’s this. I’d love to meet you.
Client Testimonials:
Jo has been fundamental in my recovery.
She enabled me to feel safe to explore themes that were deeply impactful. Her intelligence and skill shone through as she pitched each session perfectly to support, enable and facilitate progress. I will be forever grateful to her. (KM)
Jo’s therapy has been transformative for me - I’ve worked with several therapists, and never truly understood the importance of finding the ‘right fit’ until working with Jo. There is more she has done for me than I can put into words, but it’s not an exaggeration when I say therapy with Jo has changed my life for the better. Thank you so much. (Francesca)
