About Me

Note about Covid-19

During the current crisis, I am able to offer sessions remotely, depending on what technology you have available.

If you're wondering about whether therapy can still be helpful to you remotely, please get in contact. I'll be happy to speak about how the experience might be different, how it might be similar and what I'll be able to offer.

About me

I am a family and systemic psychotherapist. I work with individuals, couples and families on a wide range of difficulties and have worked in a number of different public sector settings.

Family and systemic psychotherapy is an inclusive and collaborative approach to therapy. Primarily, it is an approach that promotes respect for every individual’s experiences, needs and opinions, whether you come to therapy individually or as a couple or family.

My clients know me for my warmth, whether we are talking about something positive, painful or difficult, and the sense that whatever they say, I appreciate their humanity and their intentions.

My clients tell me I create a space where they feel valued, particularly in the parts of them that have felt undervalued, or even shameful. They tell me I create a space where they begin to be able to say what has previously remained unsaid and tell a new, more hopeful story.

I draw on various approaches in my work as well as systemic therapy, particularly also compassion-focused therapy and mindfulness.

What to expect

The work could take any number of forms, because I adapt my work to the needs, preferences, diverse family forms and cultural makeup of those who come for therapy. It‘s very much about working ‘with’, not ‘on’ people.

That said, it would tend to involve enabling people to explore, together or individually, difficult thoughts and emotions safely, to understand each other’s experiences and views, appreciate each other’s needs, build on strengths and make useful changes in their relationships and their lives.

Please get in contact with me to book a free initial consultation, where we will discuss whether I will be able to be helpful to you. You will have the opportunity to get a sense of whether you will find my work helpful.

I am happy to offer free telephone consultations before we meet for the first time.

I do not assume any particular length of work with my clients, or frequency of sessions--this all depends on what you would want to work on.

At the end of the first session, we would agree on how we plan to work together, and the ways we will review the work.

What works

Family and systemic psychotherapy has been shown to be effective in the treatment of depression, chronic illness, severe psychiatric conditions and couple distress. In childhood, it is effective in response to various mood and conduct disorders, as well as eating disorders.

Please see https://www.aft.org.uk/consider/view/consider.html for more information on family and systemic psychotherapy and the difficulties that are helped by it.
