About Me

I am an experienced psychotherapist offering an empathetic and supportive space in which to explore your emotional life, with a view to its renewal or enhancement. My aim is to help make sense of thoughts and feelings, however challenging, in a confidential and non-judgemental relationship. I believe that insight helps to build a more secure sense of self, and can improve relationships with others and that developing this insight is central to the work of therapy.

I have worked with people from many different backgrounds and believe in treating each person who seeks therapy with kindness and as an individual. I offer both short term and open ended therapy for a range of difficulties including depression, anxiety, loss, feelings of worthlessness and emptiness, eating disorders and low self- esteem.

Therapy is an individual process and the reasons that bring people to seek it are many and varied. Perhaps you are at a point in your life where you are feeling directionless, anxious, or despairing. May be you feel weighed down, or stuck in patterns of behaviour that feel unhealthy or destructive. Or you may feel as if past life events, relationships or conflicts are impacting on your sense of emotional wellbeing. Perhaps you want some time to understand yourself better, to reflect on your inner life and consider how it effects how you are and how you feel in the world.

Therapy can be a challenging experience and may seem daunting, especially at first, but we will proceed at a pace that feels comfortable to you, and only after an initial consultation where we consider together whether open-ended or short term therapy is most suitable. Your concerns may seem too big, too personal, or too trivial to share with friends and family. But with me you will be encouraged to share anything you want to about your life – both past and present. This may be your feelings and emotions, childhood recollections and memories, your thoughts about relationships and your dreams.

To open up and share our most private thoughts and fears with a professionally trained therapist can be invaluable. In fact, the decision to start therapy can be one of the most positive steps we ever take.

How I Work

You may have had counselling or therapy sessions previously, or the experience many be entirely new to you. Either way, it can be daunting to make the initial step in approaching a therapist. My aim is to make you feel comfortable from our very first contact.

Our initial consultation will enable me to find out about you and what had brought you to seek therapy. And it will give you the opportunity to consider whether you feel that I am someone you can open up to and develop a working relationship with.

I work both with clients in an open ended arrangement and with a short term contract. Open ended therapy gives you time to explore your emotional life in depth. There are no set number of sessions and therefore the time and space to make complex connections, explore interpretations and freely consider links between past experiences and current states of mind.

Short term therapy is usually based on twelve sessions. We will work with a focus and formulate together a goal towards which to work. This could be the exploration of a specific pattern in relationships, modes of behaviour or troubling symptoms. As with open ended work, there is the opportunity to explore in depth in order to improve self-awareness and consider the possibility for change – but we will remain close to the agreed focus.

As a psychodynamic psychotherapist I believe that the events of early life, and the relationships formed there, have a powerful effect on how we feel and act in adulthood. In our sessions you will be encouraged to explore this, in order to better consider and reflect on your emotions and experiences. My role is not to impose my ideas upon you but to help make sense of your thoughts and feelings, however challenging, and to offer acceptance in a confidential and non-judgemental relationship.

Training and qualifications

I hold a Post Graduate Diploma in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy from WPF, London, where I trained in both open ended and short term therapy. As well as working in private practice, I currently act as a Student Counsellor at a central London university and work in the voluntary sector in South West London.

My own background, before training as a psychotherapist, is in education and the arts. This has given me a particular understanding of the challenges faced by young adults, and the role that creativity can have in expressing and understanding our innermost thoughts and fears. However, I have worked with people from many different backgrounds and believe in treating each person who seeks therapy as an individual.

I am a registered member of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BAPC) and of the Foundation for Psychotherapy and Counselling(FPC). These professional bodies ensure that all of their members are appropriately trained and qualified, and that they continue with their professional development and that they adhere to their Ethical Framework for Good Practice.
