Katerina Georgiou
Gestalt counsellorAbout Me
UPDATE: Amid Covid-19 measures, I have temporarily moved my practice online and will be offering online and tele therapy via Doxy, Zoom or telephone.
I'm an accredited member of BACP (Reg MBACP Accred), seeing clients in a GP surgery and private practice, working with individuals, couples/relationships and groups. I'm also a registered psychotherapy practitioner with BAPAM (British Association for Performing Arts Medicine).
My style is warm and empathic. Sessions can sometimes feel spontaneous and playful, and other times reflective with lots of dialogue between us. I don't give advice, but facilitate your self-awareness, getting to the crux of underlying feelings and the core of who you are and what you want when you remove society's expectations out of the equation. My aim is not to interpret what you do or say or to define who you are but to support you to define yourself. I take into account your use of words, feelings and body language as much as your thoughts and may, where appropriate, incorporate creative elements such as drawing, drama, movement, dream work, visualisations and two-chair work. I go with what comes up in the moment, with no fixed agenda, and work organically through that process really focusing in on that moment in time.
Alongside my therapeutic work, I'm a professional freelance journalist published in The Guardian, The Independent, The Times, Wellcome Collection and women's magazines. I routinely appear in national press and radio on issues related to counselling, therapy and mental health, including BBC Radio, Psychologies, OK! Magazine, Grazia, Stylist, The Mirror, The Sun, Metro, Evening Standard, Scottish Daily Record, Refinery29, and more.
I am the founder and host of the music and mental health podcast Sound Affects Podcast, featured in NME's Podcast for the People series, and in Therapy Today. I am attuned to the issues that both the journalistic and other artistic/creative professions can bring up.
Prior to this, I was a Samaritans helpline listener for 4 years and also worked for Samaritans during the Men on The Ropes research campaign into male suicide. I have a lot of empathy and knowledge in this area. I have also worked with Mind as a life coach, and a specialist mental health mentor for universities.
