About Me

My approach and how psychotherapy can help...

I am an Attachment-based Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist. I see psychotherapy as a co-operative venture between psychotherapist and client. By providing a warm, empathic and non-judgemental environment, clients have the opportunity to share experiences and feelings they may not have been able to talk about before. A secure, therapeutic relationship makes it possible for people to explore the impact of important relationships and mourn past losses, so that healing of early experiences of misattunement, loss and trauma can take place.

'…the human psyche, like human bones, is strongly inclined towards self-healing. The psychotherapist’s job, like that of the orthopaedic surgeon, is to provide the conditions in which self-healing can best take place' JOHN BOWLBY

Attachment-based psychoanalytic psychotherapy...

Attachment-based psychotherapy has at its core an understanding of the importance of relationships to human growth and development throughout life. When we feel alone, or relationships go wrong in childhood or adulthood, our ability to manage our lives may be disrupted or thrown into crisis. Secure and supportive relationships enable us to develop a sense of who we are.

A psychoanalytic approach can help us to make sense of how we got to where we are now and to face some of the feelings and fears we may have hidden from ourselves. Sometimes we may find ourselves repeating patterns from the past or getting stuck in a lifestyle, relationships or behaviours, which may not be helpful to us. A psychoanalytic approach is a method of communication which aims to bring into awareness those ways of being which are unconscious, deeply set and inclined to frustrating repetitions.

Training and qualifications

I completed the four-year training at The Bowlby Centre in London in 2012, where I am now a Member; and I am a Registered Psychotherapist with the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP).

The Bowlby Centre emerged out of a radical development in the psychoanalytic tradition: an attachment-based approach, pioneered by John Bowlby, which emphasises our need for others - and the impact on us when early relationships are insecure, dangerous or abandoning. As a psychoanalytic school, it also draws on the importance of the unconscious and internal world. It is a pioneering organisation, with expertise in areas that include trauma, dissociation, addiction and disability; and it has a passionate commitment to valuing diversity.

Why people come to me for psychotherapy...

I have worked as a psychotherapist since 2011, helping a wide range of individual clients with issues such as:

  • Loss, bereavement, relationship breakdown
  • Addictions, eating problems, self-harm, phobias, obsessions
  • Impact of domestic violence, childhood sexual abuse, trauma
  • Confusion about identity
  • Feeling afraid, panicky, stressed, in crisis, or in a state of breakdown
  • Impact of racism, homophobia, oppression, discrimination
  • Experiencing anxiety, depression, or suicidal feelings
  • Feeling empty, lonely, abandoned, unable to make lasting relationships
  • Difficulties in family relationships

Principles and values...

I subscribe to the UKCP Ethical Principles and Code of Professional Conduct and The Bowlby Centre's Values. My work is grounded in anti-discriminatory practice - respecting and valuing differences in ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability, religion, class, educational background and income.

'...those who have been silenced about their experiences and survival strategies must have their reality acknowledged and not pathologised.' THE BOWLBY CENTRE

Additional experience...

Prior to training as a psychotherapist, I qualified as a Master Practitioner in Neuro-Linguistic Programming with the International NLP Trainers Association (INLPTA); and I also have a degree and professional background in the arts.
