Annette Byford
Psychodynamic counselling psychologistAbout Me
I am a chartered psychologist and psychodynamic psychotherapist. My main training took place at the Royal South Hants Hospital in Southampton and the Tavistock Clinic in London.
I offer one to one psychotherapy to adults and clinical supervision.
I have worked since then as a therapist in private practice seeing adult clients and as a lecturer and clinical supervisor in various settings including the NHS, university and the voluntary sector.
I have carried out research into the use of language in bilingual clients published in the British Journal of Psychotherapy. In 2019 I published a book on the emotional impact of weddings on families A Wedding in the Family. My second book „Once a mother, always a mother“ (2022) explored the experience of being a mother of adult children.
I am interested in the emotional impact of transitions including family transitions in a person‘s life, from leaving home through settling with a partner, becoming a parent, divorce, children leaving home , retirement to name a few. I am also interested in questions of ageing and identity, particularly for women.
As a bilingual and bicultural therapist all aspects of language and culture influencing our experience of self are something I am happy to talk about.
Through writing books and being involved in promoting them I have experience of interacting with media, such as interviews for national newspapers, podcasts and radio ( Woman’s hour, local radio, radio London). I have given lectures related to the subject of both books for psychotherapy training organisations and was interviewed for Welldoing.org cpd events.
