About Me

C. Comfort Shields, CPsychol, MPhil & MSt (Oxon), MA, FRAI

WELCOME, I am a psychotherapist and founder of the Box Tree Clinic in the Harley Street District of Marylebone, Central London, where I was Clinical Director for several years. I see adults from any culture, sexuality, gender, and religion for individual and couples therapy. My approach is primarily relational and humanistic. I integrate other approaches such as dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT) depending on clients’ needs. I work non-judgmentally and confidentially.

MY PHILOSOPHY IS that difficult and traumatic events in your life do not have to define you. It is how you interpret those events and what you make of them that defines you. Some amount of emotional trauma is part of human existence, but individuals are best able to work through painful experiences and find meaning in their lives when they receive emotional validation and empathy from their therapists through the process of therapeutic alliance.

"I believe in the inherent strength and resilience of my clients. My goal is to help you flourish. It's your journey, and I'm here to support you."

Training and qualifications

I am a chartered psychologist with the  British Psychological Society and a registered member of the BACP, a graduate of Oxford University, Fielding Graduate University (American Psychological Association Accredited), and completed clinical training at Yale Medical Centre. Clinical psychology training in the United States is of long duration and is comprehensive, preparing psychologists to be psychotherapists, diagnosticians, as well as researchers and academics. I have a deep understanding of personality development, which I bring to my clients, helping to understand both practical ways to increase wellbeing immediately as well as to work on profound and more long-lasting changes.

I am a published author, have published peer reviewed articles in leading psychology journals, and presented research at the American Psychological Association's national convention. I have done extensive original research on emotional trauma related to complex bereavement, attachment, and temporality, and was awarded the Creative Longevity and Wisdom Fellowship from the Institute for Social Innovation. I have spoken publicly on dozens of radio programmes about suicide bereavement. I practice with a psychodynamic humanistic approach for most issues. Additionally, I am one of a few therapists in London experienced in Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE) and also Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET) for PTSD. PE is the PTSD treatment of choice of the American, Canadian, and Israel army. It is also favoured by the United States Veterans Association. It is indicated for many types of PTSD, including chronic traumas as well as one-time traumatic experiences. Narrative Exposure Therapy is a first-line treatment for victims of human rights violations from war, sex trafficking, sexual abuse, and torture.
