Alex Burns
Psychodynamic psychotherapistAbout Me
Hello, and welcome to my profile page. I am Alex Burns and as a Psychotherapist and Counsellor I have more than 30 years' experience of working with both adult individuals and couples who need professional help either for themselves or with their relationships.
In private practice my work is with adult individuals and couples who are experiencing emotional difficulties of many kinds. My approach is to offer a supportive, gentle and reflective environment in which to explore the possible causes of the difficulties the client is experiencing and the resulting emotions that arise from them. My many years of experience in practice supports this therapeutic approach, where, over time, my clients have the opportunity to gain a much deeper understanding of themselves and bring increased clarity to their relationships with others. I have a particular interest in the possible links between organic illness and emotional distress.
Some of the issues that bring people to seek my professional help are Depression, Low Self-Esteem; Low Self-Confidence; Loss of sense of self; Stress; Bullying; Bereavement, Grief and Loss; Adoption; Step-Parenting; Relationship and Family difficulties; Couples Counselling; Separation and Divorce.
I am a member of the British Psychological Society, a member of the College of Psychoanalysts UK, and have been awarded Life Membership of the Institute for Psychotherapy and Social Studies (IPSS).
My professional registration is with the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). The register of the UKCP is accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
My Background.
Prior to qualifying as a Psychotherapist, I worked in the public sector in youth and community work and then in the industrial sector with a particular interest in Stress Management and Human Resources. Following the completion of a degree in Psychology I was a lecturer in the Psychology Department of Middlesex University where I specialised in Child and Adolescent Development.
My postgraduate training as a Psychotherapist was at the Institute of Psychotherapy and Social Studies (IPSS). After qualifying and becoming a registered Psychotherapist I began my private practice in London. In addition, for over a decade I was involved in the training and supervision of post-graduate level psychotherapists. I became a joint Course Director for the MA / Diploma Course in Psychotherapy at the IPSS, as well as Vice-Chair of the Institute's Training Committee. Currently my practice is in Rugby and is easily reached from the M1, M6, A14 and A45.
