Alan Penney
Integrative counsellorAbout Me
My name is Alan Penney BSc (Hons) MBACP and I am a fully qualified Integrative Counsellor and Psychotherapist. Which means that I utilise several therapeutic techniques and interventions in order to facilitate an issue or issues that a client may be presenting with. My way of working typically encapsulates the models of Person-Centred, Psychodynamic and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). However, as an Integrative therapist I am not limited to just these models and thus can offer greater flexibility than therapists whom only offer one specific form of therapy. In addition, I am a registered member of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP) and adhere to their code of ethics.
I have accumulated hundreds of hours working with clients over the years in various organisations such as Mind. However, invariably Counselling in the community tends to be of a time-limited edict. Thus, working in private practice I consider to be more inviting and empowering for the client as I offer an open-ended contract whereupon the client decides when their therapy should come to a close.
Moreover, I specifically offer a dedicated online and telephone private counselling service, for instance some individuals live in rural and remote areas where no mental health services are provided. Online and telephone therapy not only preclude this hardship but in addition it allows therapy to be made readily accessible for clients that are house bound or those who are afflicted with physical disabilities which can exacerbate travelling. Also, therapy within these parameters is immensely more comfortable and convenient, the client chooses the time and the place will never be inhibited by parking or any other concomitant stress because therapy happens within the privacy of a client's own home. Therefore, if a client is feeling too anxious for therapy in person, therapy online or over the phone can absolve this barrier as well. The most important reason why I offer these services is simply because there belies countless individuals who would love to be able to access therapy but far too often are marginalised for just some of the reasons that I have pointed out in this paragraph and this list alas only scratches the surface.
Mental health invariably affects everyone at some point in their lives, now hopefully when this maelstrom of turmoil hits they can access therapy in person with relative ease, albeit if that is not the case, don't be alarmed because that is what online and telephone therapy are for. Rest assured online therapy is clearly the future and the future is ready when you are.
Finally, it should be noted that Counselling can be life-changing, albeit success is typically underpinned by the effort that clients are willing to put into therapy which is often tantamount with the benefits that they receive. Like life, there are no guarantees, but if clients become catalysts for the change that they wish to see in themselves and their lives, the likelihood of success in Counselling is buoyed exponentially.
I will support you in a therapeutic relationship with perpetual empathy, understanding, professionalism and challenge with compassion, as the journey that you embark on will be traversed without judgment which will hopefully make it easier to find what you're searching for.
Best of luck on your therapeutic voyage, I look forward to working with you.
